Yoruba chief’s or king’s headdress. In Yorubaland, as elsewhere in the world, elaborate headgear calls attention to the high rank of the wearer. The costly workmanship and rigid pillbox structure of this hat suggest that it was made for a male chief. Most Yoruba women wear cloth head-ties. Most Yoruba women wear cloth head-ties. Most untitled Yoruba men wear collapsible hats of a similar shape that are folded down on one side.
