Detailed Description of Significance:

In Santería/Ocha the twins are a very powerful divinity. The Mellis or Ibeyis are also known as the twin orichas. They are associated with health and healing. The concept of twins is very powerful in this religion. It is believed that twins share a soul and that twins will bless a house. Therefore, twins are cared for, even if one twin dies, the family will continue to honor his or her memory through the religion.

According to Santería/Ocha mythology, the Ibeyis are the children of Changó and Ochún.  However, they were raised by Yemayá. This myth explains why the pots are decorated in this particular manner. The left pot is decorated using the colors and sacred number (6) of Changó and the right pot is decorated in the colors and sacred number (7) of Yemayá. However the size, shape, and use of the cowry shells emphasize that the pots are meant to appear very similar, similar to fraternal twins. In this case, the male twin is the Changó pot and the female twin is the Yemayá pot.
