Besseim is the Snake God in the Jeje nation, or denomination, of the Afro-Brazilian Candomblé religion. A similar god named Oxumarê is worshiped in the Quêto/Nagô nation. He is a very important figure and the sculpture is made as a symbolic tribute to him. The spear and the two snakes are his symbols.
