These drums are said to have been “born” from Galí’s set of drums, just as his set of drums was “born” from those of Galí’s godfather (padrino) Chachá, the great ancestor of all batá drumming in the city of Matanzas.  All of the sacred drums are understood to have a common progenitor, and each ensemble of drums is regarded as a nuclear family (Akìwọwọ and Font-Navarrete 2015:44; 45).  This set of drums was consecrated and fed during the same series of rites in which I was, in a secret ceremony, ritually prepared to handle and play them.
